1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am currently doing research with Dr. Clifford Robinson in the Humanities department. My research project is looking into how the ancient Greeks depicted emotions in their artwork and the societal implications it represents.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
I love being able to engage in a subject I have grown to have a deep passion for, art history, and using that as a lens to learn more about this civilization and their way of life. My work is also very multidisciplinary allowing me to not only study the art but read into the geography, politics, and religious beliefs of the ancient Greeks and their lands as well.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
A big part of my research is looking directly at works of art requiring intensive analysis of visual evidence. This has led me to be more observant and learn to be cognizant of even the slightest of details. It also requires extensive reading helping me to improve on my critical thinking.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Having never conducted my own humanities research before it has been difficult to get out of the mindset of adhering to the scientific method. I am so used to having everything done so stringently while now engaging in research that occurs far more fluidly and is independent in structure. However, I have gained more confidence in my ability to conduct research with time and practice.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
A big part of the field of dentistry is an attentiveness to detail. My research has allowed me to better hone in on this skill but also appreciate how we can learn from all subjects. Many might think what can you gain in dentistry from doing research in art history, but I have learned that the two disciplines are far more similar than we think.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
My passion for art history started in the 10th grade when I took AP Art History as a joke with a friend. It ended up being the most influential class I took all of high school, and a place from where I have some of my fondest memories.
7. How has the COVID pandemic impacting you and how are you coping with it ?
Though my research can primarily be done autonomously, COVID-19 has made it harder to get literary resources and the ability to view certain works. I have coped by allowing myself to remain flexible with my work and unfazed by the setbacks.
