BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES MAJOR CLASS OF 2022
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
This summer I am conducting research with Dr. Sahi in the Department of Biological Sciences. My project design includes a drug release study using phytochemical-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). I will study the release behavior of Kaempferol-coated AuNPs in a physiological buffer solution to mimic the effects of release in the human body, specifically targeting cancer cells.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
As a pre-medical student, I have always been interested in nanotechnology and its applications in cancer. This research gives me the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments and gain a better understanding on the potential impact of phytochemicals delivered through gold nanoparticles on cancer cells. The idea that this project could positively impact so many lives furthers my passion for research and medicine.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
Through the USURF experience I’ve been able to further develop my critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. I’ve also become more confident in my laboratory techniques and using various instrumentation and programs while working independently.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Some challenges I’ve encountered are getting results that I was not expecting to see. While experiments going awry is frustrating, I’ve learned to identify and solve the problem when needed. I realized that by reading more literature I can find alternate methods to reach the same goal and keep myself updated in this field.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
My USURF experience has allowed me to delve beyond the literature and see how medicine is evolving through new innovations and studies. By studying the effects of phytochemicals on the body in vivo I am now able to better understand how drug delivery works and the biochemical interactions that make it effective.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Outside of research and school, I love reading novels, playing the guitar, and painting. I also enjoy dancing with my friends and working at the Writing Center on campus!
