NEUROSCIENCE MAJOR CLASS OF 2024
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
This summer I am doing research with Dr. Melissa Manners. The project looks at the effect of chronic stress on mice, examining both behavioral and molecular effects with a goal of finding new targets for anti-depressant treatments.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
I think the most interesting thing for me about the research we do in the Manners Lab is the potential to impact so many lives. Using the knowledge we gain about how stress impacts the brain could prove useful for so many people, and possibly even uncover new targets for treating depression. There is still so much unknown about the brain and how it functions, and I love being able to be a part of uncovering new little bits of knowledge.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
The USURF experience has taught me many critical lab skills including mouse handling, behavioral testing using ANY-Maze software, perfusing, DNA extraction, genotyping, and running gel electrophoresis, as well as techniques and resources for sifting through data in a way that is relevant to what we’re looking for. Additionally, I have learned the importance of many soft skills, including clear communication, time management, punctuality, and professionalism.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
I would say the biggest challenges in research have been learning how to fail and make mistakes (and then pick myself up and move on), and how to be okay with needing to ask questions and feeling a little lost at times. Of course, with a lot of new skills and protocols to learn, mistakes and failure are inevitable, so it’s critical to learn how to improve from that and troubleshoot so it doesn’t happen again. I think one of my biggest growth points has come in the form of not being afraid to ask questions and eventually getting to the point of performing the protocol without any assistance.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
My USURF experience has given me a lot more insight into just how long the process of scientific discovery is. You need a lot of patience, perseverance, and grit, and I now have a lot more appreciation for not only researchers in my field, but scientists in general.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I love to bake! My favorites to make include cannoli and cheesecakes. I also enjoy hiking, playing guitar, and petting any dog I see.
