1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
This summer I am conducting research with Dr. D'mello to design a static digestion model that simulates the fed state small intestine in vitro. Then I will use high performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence-mediated detection to detect the amino acid, phenylalanine in this model.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
I find this research to be fascinating because it involves translating a very dynamic and complex set of processes into a method that is executable and replicable using standard lab equipment. From the mouth to the stomach to the small intestine, each environment must be simulated with a different pH and different combinations and concentrations of electrolytes and enzymes.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
Through the USURF experience I have learned how to be flexible, how to think critically to solve problems, and how to be a mentor to my peers. I have also been able to refine my lab technique when it comes to micropipetting and using high performance liquid chromatography.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
One of the challenges I have encountered in my research is learning how to view unexpected results in a different light. Often, unexpected results can be confusing and frustrating because they contradict carefully thought-out predictions or imply that mistakes were made. I’ve always viewed them as undesirable; however, I now try to think of them as opportunities to learn. Whether scientific reasoning or possible errors needs to be addressed, unexpected results have helped me to grow as a researcher.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
I chose Pharmaceutical Sciences as my major because of my love of chemistry and my interest in pharmaceutical research. My USURF experienced has made me feel confident in my choice and has shown me the numerous opportunities and nuances in this relatively specialized field.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and playing the ukulele. Sophomore year of college, I borrowed my friend’s ukulele so often that my brother bought me one for Christmas, and now I can play nearly 50 songs!
7. How has the COVID pandemic impacting you and how are you coping with it?
Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about uncertain and unprecedented times. The most challenging aspect for me has been in finding ways to balance health and safety with social needs. I am coping with the pandemic and its implications by staying connected with friends and family through phone calls and video chats and by practicing gratitude daily.
