1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am conducting research under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Sautter. We are studying the effects of childhood risk factors on chronic conditions in later life development. We are also assessing moderating and mediating factors that impact the presence and strength of the measured relationships.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
My study and my subsequent findings are much relevant to not only for the understanding of this natural phenomenon, but also for healthcare applications. Much of what I do can translate and is representative to larg er populations. Besides, the deeper and deeper I get into my research inquiries, the more I realize that there is a whole landscape of questions still left unexplored.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
Secondary analysis requires much comprehension and synthesis of data and pre-existing findings. I have been fortunate enough to develop the skills needed to critical think, efficiently compile complex information, and triage hundreds of research articles and previous literature to direct my study into novel findings.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Challenges in secondary sociological research are innate and inevitable to this branch of research. Due to the inability to manipulate the variables, our research questions are restricted to data that is already available. While this can lead to minor setbacks, we have often found many avenues to pursue our questions even with the limited database.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
USURF experience has allowed me to gain a larger understanding and appreciation for the impacts of psychological, sociological, and economical factors on health. In addition to medical interventions and biological inquiries into patients, I believe it is instrumental to explore other factors in the lives of people that could have contributed to their current state. I am hopeful that my findings can provide valuable insight into the childhood health detriments and I can utilize my knowledge as a clinical skill when treating my patients.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
My favorite pass time when going to India is catfish noodling! Nothing is more satisfying than preparing food for your family from start to finish!
