BIOCHEMISTRY MAJOR CLASS OF 2022
1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am currently doing research in Dr. Zhihong Wang’s lab with graduate student Alison Yu. For my USURF research I am investigating differential protein-protein interactions of RAF kinase during membrane translocation.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
Cellular biology never ceases to amaze me. Many proteins are required to work together in a pathway to promote cellular processes such as differentiation and proliferation. A single mutation in one of those proteins may increase the activity of the pathway and cause uncontrolled cell division. Identifying which proteins are interacting with one another can ultimately help propose potential therapeutic targets for cancer treatments.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
While I am learning benchwork in coimmunoprecipitation, I am also developing skills to become a future productive graduate student.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Balancing multiple projects on a daily basis can be challenging. By maintaining a steady routine and planning weeks in advance I have been able to develop a balance in the workday.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
One thing I enjoyed the most throughout this summer of research has been the support I have received from all members of our lab. From answering challenging research questions to maintaining the lab, there is always steady support from the members of Dr. Wang’s lab. This has helped show me that in the field of research one person cannot do it all. A lab group needs to work together as a unit to produce impactful research. ~ teamwork makes the dream work ~
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I have two very cool nephews!
