1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am doing research with Dr. Myers and Dan Merenich in the Department of Biological Sciences. My project focuses around the coordination between cytoskeletal components in the formation of new blood vessels in human endothelial cells to study wound edge closures.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
I love the applicable nature that my research has towards the human body. In order to figure out why certain illnesses are occurring, looking at interactions from a cellular level is key in determining abnormalities for vascular development.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
I have been given the amazing opportunity to become more confident with working under the hood to deepen my critical thinking skills behind cellular mechanisms. I became more confident with lab skills and performing cellular biology-based techniques. Working behind the microscope and communicating with a team have allowed me to become a better researcher.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Understanding how manipulating one piece of a cell, like removing a signaling molecule, affects the ability of cells to move and communicate with other cells, was challenging at first. Also, protocols can be linked together to create complex experimental designs.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
This experience opened my eyes into the true importance of research for the development of new medicines. In order for physicians to decide the best treatment, certain risk factors are based on the macromolecular functions of cells.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I enjoy surfing during the summer and have been an active Girl Scout to my community for 14 years!
7. How has the COVID pandemic impacting you and how are you coping with it ?
Adjusting to the drastic change in lifestyle was no easy task for anyone, but I have spent my time going on walks and bike rides in my neighborhood with my family! I enjoy meditating and practicing mindfulness as well. It is so important to take care of our mental health, especially now midst the pandemic.
