1. Who are you doing research with this summer and what kind of research project are you doing?
I am doing research with Dr. Thielman and Dr. Roos in the Physical Therapy department. Our project focuses on cognitive training as a part of the treatment for post-stroke individuals.
2. What do you find fascinating in the research you’re doing?
My project consists of two different modes of treatment – in person training in a lab and virtual classes focusing on the cognitive as well as physical aspects of treatment. I have been learning more about the importance of including cognitive activities within these treatments since both the brain and muscles are impacted by strokes.
3. What skills are you learning through the USURF experience?
So far, I have learned a great deal about effectively helping patients virtually. Physical therapy is traditionally very hands-on, so the pandemic has had a big influence on the types of treatments we can implement. Virtual visits with patients are difficult, but with the right techniques they are just as successful and keep everyone safe.
4. What are the challenges you’re encountering in your research?
Adding on to the previous answer, the biggest challenge I have encountered with my research has been figuring out the best way to conduct it during COVID-19. The project requires many in-person activities, so we had to plan for virtual experiences as much as possible.
5. How is your USURF experience impacting the way you view your field?
Yes, my USURF experience has exposed me to a lot of information and significant parts of physical therapy that I would not have known otherwise. I learn about new technology and mechanisms used in treatments every day, which is very exciting.
6. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I enjoy dancing and painting.
7. How has the COVID pandemic impacting you and how are you coping with it ?
The pandemic has caused most of the research to be postponed by several months, but this has allowed me to take more time to use online resources to delve into my topic before I am exposed to it in the lab. My mentors have been amazing with communicating with me during the entire process to make sure I am well prepared.
