Book donation to Yunnan Province (1981)

Pennsylvannia-New Jersey Chapter Donated Books to Yunnan Province

Over three thousand volumes of technical books and journals were donated to the Yunnan Province by NACA-Penn-NJ, reported by Xinhua News Agency. The book donation drive was organized by Chapter President Yang, who became anxious to contribute to the cultural resources of the region after visiting and lecturing there for a period of time. The books reached Kunming, Yunnan in September 1981.

* There were numerous book drives among the chapters. In NACA Newsletter No. 6, January 15, 1985, a section on "Report from chapters," it says, "Report on Boston Chapter by Kenneth Young: Last year, Boston concluded a first phrase in a continued book drive in shipping 25,000 volumes of books to China destined mainly to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and eighteen other universities and institutes."

* A footnote: As a result of the so-called Preposition 2-1/2, many towns were required to lower their real-estate taxes to below 2.5%, and as a consequence many towns eliminated their public libraries. NACA was able to obtain large amounts of donated books from these libraries. Also, many hi-tech companies in the Boston area, for example, were also eliminating or reducing the size of their own technical libraries. Many donated technical books came from these sources.
