Teacher led

Step 1 – discuss prior knowledge of the topic

Step 2 - identify any vocabulary (words/phrase) that you don’t understand, discuss them as a class, teacher to give explicit instruction of these words (e.g. definition, examples, synonyms, examples of their use in sentences, etc).

Step 3 – read the title and predict what the article is going to be about

Step 4 – read the text (teacher reading out loud to pupils) – pupils to write one bullet point to summarise the content of each paragraph

Step 5 – summarise the whole article.

Step 6 – comprehension questions/longer-written task based on contents (optional).


Student led

Step 1 – think about prior knowledge of the topic

Step 2 - identify any vocabulary (words/phrase) that you don’t understand, look them up find out a definition, examples, synonyms, examples of their use in sentences.

Step 3 – read the title and predict what the article is going to be about
