THE STORY IN CHEROKEE LANGUAGE

ᎤᎾᏕᏘᏱᏍᎬᎢ / CHRISTMAS

In the western tradition, the First Day of Christmas begins on December 25.

The 12th Day of Christmas is January 5 (twelfth night)

Epiphany (aka Mountain Christmas or Little Christmas) is January 6th.

The old calendar has about a 13 day difference, putting December 25th on our new Calendar as January 7th.

The COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS:

Advent is the period preceding the Christmas season.

It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, and covers four Sundays. Because the day it begins changes from year to year, so does the length of each Advent season.

Count 40 Days before December 25th to determine when to begin Fasting for Christmas.

This comes out to about November 11th.

The word advent, from Latin, means “the coming.”

For centuries, Advent has been a time of spiritual reflection as well as cheer and anticipation. Even as the Christmas season has become more secular-with advertisers urging holiday gift-givers to buy and buy some more-Advent still brings joy and the observance of ancient customs.

Christian families find quiet moments lighting candles in the Advent wreath, and children use Advent calendars to count the days until Christmas.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

This is how you say "Merry Christmas!" in the Giduwa dialect.

Literally, it means Happy Their Birthday Celebration- an elder told me it refers to the trinity- and the birth of Jesus.

From what I'm told,

this is how you say "Merry Christmas!" in the Western Dialect

ᏓᏂᏍᏔᏲᎯᎲ

Danistayohihv

Literally, it means when they shoot firecrackers and refers to winter celebrations.

I was told by one person that you could see one ['U-li-he-li-s-di 'U-na-de-ti-yi-s-gv-i] as "Merry Christmas!"

and the other [Danistayohihv] as "Happy Yuletime!"

However you say it,

remember this season and consider donating to the MP3 project.

This project allows a fluent speaker the time to review a verse to make sure that what is typed online is correct- that it matches what is in the printed Bible-

and also to record it so it can be heard.

What a wonderful gift you could give your friends and family!

To have a verse recorded in their honor would have

Much more eternal value than any other gift you might give!
