The phenomenon of consumerism is now over a century old, when the term "conspicuous consumption" originated at the turn of the 20th century in the writings of sociologist and economist, Thorstein Veblen. It has been linked with the Western world, but is in fact an international phenomenon, and has been on the minds of serious thinkers for millennia.
