Mozia - Il Giovane di Mozia

Una delle attrazioni principali della splendida isola di Mozia (Trapani- Sicilia) è la statua marmorea di un giovane, comunemente nota come il "Giovanetto di Mozia". Dagli studiosi è stata definita come la "statua dei misteri", proprio perché misteriosi sono la sua origine, la sua rappresentazione simbolica, lo stile artistico e il secolo in cui la si possa collocare.
Misterioso e fascinoso è il fatto che si tratti di un reperto greco rinvenuto in una provincia punica. Ciò, infatti, ha destato molto stupore negli archeologi al momento del suo ritrovamento nella zona K dell'isola, in prossimità di Cappiddazzu, il 31 ottobre 1979.
Per quanto riguarda la provenienza si ritiene che sia orientale. È una ipotesi avvalorata dalla analisi geochimica del materiale della statua. Si tratta infatti di materiale marmoreo contenente stronzio, presente esclusivamente nelle cave di Efeso e della Tessaglia, che veniva richiesto in gran quantità dalla Magna Grecia dal momento che non disponeva di marmo.
È un mistero anche che cosa rappresenti la statua. A prima vista potrebbe sembrare un auriga per via della tunica di garza a pieghe verticali e parallele, stretta al petto, all'altezza dello sterno, da una fascia. Ma varie sono le ipotesi: sufeta, atleta vincitore e persino dio.
Parecchie difficoltà sono sorte riguardo al secolo ed allo stile artistico del manufatto. Appartiene probabilmente alla fase dell'arte greca che va dal 470 al 448 a.C.
È in stile arcaico-ionico, evidenziato dalle pieghe della tunica che, in un gioco di trasparenza, sottolineano le forme perfettamente scolpite, dalla testa brachicefala , arricchita da tre file di riccioli e dal corpo possente, robusto in alto e sottile in basso.
La presenza di una statua greca in una provincia punica è stata spiegata, ovviamente, senza assoluta certezza. Hanno abitato l'isola di Mozia pure i Greci che hanno lasciato le loro tracce nei templi, nella casa dei mosaici e nelle numerose epigrafi.
Probabilmente essi si interessarono a Mozia perché attratti dagli scambi commerciali con i Fenici.
