The ancient Cycladic culture flourished in the islands of the Aegean Sea from c. 3300 to 1100 BCE. Along with the Minoan civilization and Mycenaean Greece, the Cycladic people are counted among the three major Aegean cultures. Cycladic art therefore comprises one of the three main branches of Aegean art.
Stepping stones across the Aegean, the Cycladic islands were early settlement sites for migrants. The islanders developed a significant culture centuries before the emergence of the great Bronze Age civilizations of Crete and the Greek mainland. The distinctive marble figurines produced on various islands represent some of the most beautiful artifacts of the period, even as their original significance remains a mystery.
The Cyclades lie in the southwestern Aegean, east and southeast of Attica, and north of Crete. The name is derived from their apparent arrangement in a circle around the sacred island of Delos. Marble is the dominant feature of the islands; most are part of a submerged, mountainous land mass made of metamorphic rock. A few volcanic islands (e.g., Thera and Melos) represent exceptions. The islands are not rich in natural resources, nor are they very fertile. The development of olive cultivation made them more productive.
The island system ranges from Thera in the south to Andros in the north. Delos and Paros are among the central islands. Naxos, Paros, and Andros are among the largest, but the islands are generally small. Early Cycladic settlements probably included about a few dozen people; no island could support more than a couple of thousand inhabitants. The meager size meant that eventually the Cyclades would be unable to compete with growing cultures on Crete and mainland Greece.

These excavations have revealed the site of Dhaskalio Kavos as a place of numerous ritual offerings, dating to the Early Bronze Age (ca. 2500 BC). The quality and quantity of painted pottery, stone vessels, and marble sculptures, which were deliberately broken in the course of religious practice before systematically deposited here, provides fresh insight into Early Cycladic life and ritual. This lecture focused on the discovery -- initially as a result of looting -- of the sanctuary on Keros, in the Cycladic islands of Greece. Archaeology has revealed one of the earliest regional ritual centres in the Aegean, dating from the third millennium BC. The deposition of deliberately broken symbolic materials, mainly of marble, poses questions of interpretation. Colin Renfrew explored why the location of deposition at the sanctuary contrasts strikingly with the monumentality of contemporary ritual structures in northwestern Europe.
About the speaker:
Colin Renfrew FBA (Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn) is Emeritus Disney Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. He has directed excavations in the Cycladic islands of Greece and elsewhere.

Πεντακόσια χρόνια μετά την άνθιση του πρωτοκυκλαδικού πολιτισμού αναπτύχθηκε στη Θήρα ένας ξεχωριστός πολιτισμός με έντονα μινωικά χαρακτηριστικά. Η έκρηξη του ηφαιστείου της Θήρας, το 1500 -- 1450 π.Χ., κατέστρεψε αυτόν τον πολιτισμό αλλά στο Ακρωτήρι κάτω από την τέφρα διασώθηκαν οι περίφημες τοιχογραφίες και άλλα σημαντικά δείγματα του θηραϊκού πολιτισμού.

Το όνομα «Κυκλάδες» αναφέρεται στα νησιά που σχηματίζουν έναν κύκλο γύρω από το ιερό νησί της Δήλου στο Αιγαίο Πέλαγος. Η ελληνική μυθολογία αναφέρει ότι οι Κυκλάδες είναι δημιούργημα του Ποσειδώνα, ο οποίος μεταμόρφωσε σε νησίδες τις νύμφες Κυκλάδες, όταν αυτές προκάλεσαν την οργή του. Ο Κυκλαδικός πολιτισμός άνθισε κατά την 3η χιλιετία π.Χ. κυρίως χάρη στη στρατηγική γεωγραφική θέση του συμπλέγματος των νησιών αλλά και του ορυκτού τους πλούτου.
Το κάθε ένα από τα 24 νησιά παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερα στοιχεία και τη δική του ομορφιά, ωστόσο όλα τους χαρακτηρίζονται από τη γοητευτική συνύπαρξη του λευκού και του μπλε στην κυκλαδίτικη αρχιτεκτονική, τις αμέτρητες αμμουδιές, τα βραχώδη τοπία, τους παραδοσιακούς οικισμούς, τον καταγάλανο ουρανό, το βαθύ μπλε του Αιγαίου και τον άνεμο και το εκτυφλωτικό φως του ήλιου.
