Greek Art in the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was one of the greatest empires in history due to both its vast reach and its influence over generations to come. Roman aristocrats loved art and enjoyed it in many different ways - reading poetry, attending the theatre or collecting works of fine art.

While the Roman Empire was growing rapidly, the Ancient Greek civilization was coming to its end. The decline of the Greek Empire was irrevocable once the Romans took over their territory in the 2^nd century BC After the Battle of Corinth, a new age that would last until the 4^th century AD began. During this period of history, the previously splendorous Greek Empire became known as the Roman Greece.

After the battles, the successful generals returned to Rome greatly impressed by the art they had seen in Greece, and they contributed to the admiration of Greek culture throughout the Roman Empire. Mythology and religion, philosophy, pottery, sculpture and poetry were just some of the fields where the Greeks influenced the Romans.

The quick spread of Greece’s influence was helped by the fact that many Roman Emperors admired their culture, and not only contributed to it by building new monuments in Greek cities, but also by acting as Maecenas of Greek inspired works of art.

By the 1^st century AD, the impact of Greek culture over the Roman Empire was obvious for all to see. Roman gods were in most cases recognizable from Greek Mythology, the famous Roman poet Virgil wrote the Aeneid influenced by Homer’s epics, and they even copied Ancient Greek statues.

Interestingly, many Greek masterpieces, such as the Sculpture of the Three Graces or the Statue of Diadoumenos survived in the form of Roman copies. By the 2^nd century AD, the copies of Greek statues were demanded not only by the Roman nobility but also by the government of the Empire to decorate theatres, public baths and monuments.

Although the Greek civilization in the strictest meaning of the word disappeared after its conquest by the Roman Empire, its culture continued to survive across the ages, and its powerful influence over art is noticeable even today.
