Ο Ηνίοχος - The Charioteer
Το άγαλμα του ηνιόχου είναι αναμφίβολα το πιο διάσημο από τα αφιερώματα στους Δελφούς. Ο νεαρός απεικονίζεται όρθιος στο δίφρο, αμέσως μετά τη νίκη του. Φορά τον τυπικό μακρύ χιτώνα των ηνιόχων, που ζώνεται ψηλά και συγκρατείται με δύο ταινίες για να μην ανεμίζει κατά τη διάρκεια του αγώνα. Οι πτυχώσεις του χιτώνα κάτω από το ζωστήρα δίνουν την εντύπωση δωρικού κίονα, ενώ οι πτυχές στο πάνω μέρος του κορμού είναι λοξές ή καμπύλες. Τα μαλλιά του περιζώνει ταινία, σύμβολο της νίκης, διακοσμημένη με ένθετο ασημί μαίανδρο. Τα μάτια του είναι ένθετα από ημιπολύτιμο λίθο και γυαλί και εκφράζουν τη δύναμη και την αυτοκυριαρχία του. Το άγαλμα ήταν μέρος ενός μεγάλου αφιερώματος, που περιλάμβανε το τέθριππο άρμα και μια δεύτερη ανδρική μορφή. Προσφέρθηκε από τον τύραννο της Γέλας Πολύζαλο, ύστερα από νίκη του σε αρματοδρομία στα Πύθια. Είναι κατασκευασμένο με τη μέθοδο του «χαμένου κεριού» και αποτελεί τυπικό δείγμα του αυστηρού ρυθμού. Θεωρείται έργο μεγάλου καλλιτέχνη, ίσως του Πυθαγόρα από το Ρήγιο.
The Charioteer
This bronze masterpiece is the most renowned of the Delphic votive offerings. The young charioteer stands on his chariot, moments after his victory. He wears the distinctive charioteers' long chiton, belted up high and held tight by bands to prevent it from billowing and flapping in the wind. Below the belt, the chiton falls in straight pleats, which convey the shape of a Doric column. The pleats above the belt form oblique and curved patterns. A band inlaid with a silver meander, which symbolizes the charioteer's victory, is fastened around his head. His expressive eyes, made of glass and semi-precious stone, convey a sense of power and self-confidence. The statue was part of a larger monument, which included a four-horse chariot and a second male figure. It was offered by Polyzalos, tyrant of Gela, after his victory at a chariot race of the Pythian games. Cast in the 'lost wax' technique, it is a characteristic example of the Severe Style of Classical Greek art. It is considered to be the work of a great artist, possible of Pythagoras of Regio.

Ένας άντρας, που έχει ως είδωλο τον Ηνίοχο, ζει τα ιστορικά γεγονότα της πεντηκονταετίας, από το 1941 έως και το 1991. Ως φοιτητής, προ του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, φυλακίζεται από τους Ιταλούς και δραπετεύει, καταφεύγοντας στα βουνά όπου τον βρίσκει μια ομάδα ανταρτών και τον εντάσσει στη δύναμή της. Μετά την εμπειρία της πρώτης του μάχης με τους Γερμανούς, οι οποίοι έκαψαν ένα χωριό – ενώ οι αντάρτες σκότωσαν κάποιους αιχμαλώτους –, ζει την Αντίσταση και τη φρίκη του Εμφυλίου, έχοντας πάντα μια προσωπική ενατένιση των γεγονότων και της ζωής στο σύνολό της, κρατώντας πάντα σταθερά τα ηνία.
