The Ancient Greek Civilization has made a wide range of significant contributions to the world we live in today. Philosophy, democracy, justice, The Olympics and fine arts such as poetry, theatre and some of the oldest and finest sculptures were made by the ancient Greeks.
Below is a list of the 5 greatest surviving ancient Greek statues.
1) Aphrodite de Milos (Venus De Milo)
On display at the Louvre in Paris is one of the most famous pieces of ancient Greek sculpture. The statue of Aphrodite de Milos is regarded as the most beautiful model of a woman’s body. It was created between 130 and 100 BC, it is believed to depict Aphrodite (called Venus by the Romans), the Greek goddess of love and beauty. It is a marble sculpture and slightly larger than life size at 203 cm (6.7 ft) high.
2) Winged Victory of Samothrace
Also known as the Nike of Samothrace. It is a third century B.C. marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). The sculpture has been proudly displayed in the Louvre since 1984 and is one of the most celebrated sculpture sin the world.
3) Laocoon and His Sons
Also known as the Laocoon Group, this is another incredible sculpture housed in the Vatican Museums in Rome and shows Trojan priest Laocoon and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus being strangled by sea serpents.
4) Bronze Zeus
This Bronze Sculpture is thought to be either Poseidon or Zeus created about. 460 B.C. It is now housed at the National Archeological Museum in Athens. This masterpiece of classical sculpture was found by fishermen in their nets off the coast of Cape Artemisium in 1928. The figure is more than 2 m in height.
5) The Charioteer of Delphi
The Charioteer of Delphi is based in the Delphi Archaeological Museum is one of the greatest surviving works of the ancient Greeks. Dating from 470 B.C. and part of a larger statue given to the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi by Polyzalos, this bronze piece is in the Early Classical style and one of the few Greek statues to retain its inlaid glass eyes.
