08 Greatest Greek Bronze Statues

The Ancient Greeks had a profound impact on the modern world. Much is often spoken about contributions such as democracy and philosophy but they also cared greatly about the arts, and in particular bronze sculptures.

Below you can see some of the most famous ancient Greek bronze statues.

The “Riace bronzes”

The Bronzi di Riace (Italian for "Riace bronzes") are two famous full-size Greek bronzes of nude bearded warriors, cast about 460–430 BC and currently housed by the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The Riace Warriors are respectively termed "A" and "B".

There is no clear testimony in ancient literature to identify the athletes or heroes depicted by the bronzes. These bronzes are from the early Classical Period, made about 445 BC. They are a fine example of contrapposto - the weight is on the back legs and is much more realistic than Archaic stances.

Piraeus Apollo

Piraeus Apollo is the name of an archaic-style bronze statue dating from the 6th century BC exhibited now at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus (Athens).

Apollo was the god of the ideal order and balance and the depictions of naked young men in the Kouros (young male) type are believed to be representations of the god. This bronze-statue seems to be the last stage in the development of the formal almost static Kouros type that survived for a long time from the early Archaic period (640-580 BC).

Marathon Boy

The “Marathon Boy” or “Ephebe of Marathon” is a Greek bronze sculpture found in the Aegean Sea in the bay of Marathon in 1925; it is conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, where it is dated ca 325-300 BCE.

The Museum suggests that the subject may be a youthful depiction of Hermes, though none of the god's attributes are present

Jockey of Artemision

The Jockey of Artemision is a large Hellenistic bronze statue of a young boy riding a horse, dated to c.140BC but possibly as early as 200BC. It is a rare surviving original bronze statue from Ancient Greece, particularly the Hellenistic period, and also a rare example of a Greek sculpture of a racehorse.

The equestrian statue is approximately life-size, with a length of 2.9 metres (9.5 ft) and 2.1 metres (6.9 ft) high. Some parts are missing, such as the rider's whip and reins, and the horse's bridle. The image of the goddess Nike is engraved on the horse's right thigh, holding a wreath in raised hands; a brand for racehorses in Ancient Greece. The horse dwarfs its jockey, a boy only 84 centimetres (2.76 ft) tall and perhaps 10 years old.

Discobulos

The Discobolus of Myron is a famous Greek sculpture that was completed towards the end of the Severe period, circa 460-450 BC. The original Greek bronze is lost.

It is known through numerous Roman copies, both full-scale ones in marble or smaller scaled versions in bronze. Naturally, as always in Greek athletics, the Discobolus is completely nude. His pose is said to be unnatural to a human, and today considered a rather inefficient way to throw the discus. Also there is very little emotion shown in the discus thrower’s face.

Artemision Bronze

The Artemision Bronze (often called the God from the Sea) is an ancient Greek sculpture that was recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision.

It represents either Zeus or Poseidon, slightly over life size, brandishing a missing thunderbolt (if Zeus) or trident (if Poseidon) with his raised right hand and sighting over his extended left hand.

Antikythera Ephebe

The Antikythera Ephebe is a bronze statue of a young man that was found in 1900 by sponge-divers in the area of an ancient shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, Greece.

It was the first of the series of Greek bronze sculptures that the Aegean and Mediterranean yielded up in the twentieth century which have fundamentally altered the modern view of Ancient Greek sculpture.

Charioteer of Delphi

The Charioteer of Delphi, also known as Heniokhos (the rein-holder), is one of the best-known statues surviving from Ancient Greece, and is considered one of the finest examples of ancient bronze statues. The life-size statue of a chariot driver was found in 1896 at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. It is now in the Delphi Archaeological Museum.

The statue was erected at Delphi in 474 BC, to commemorate the victory of a chariot team in the Pythian Games, which were held at Delphi every four years in honor of Pythean Apollo.

It was originally part of a larger group of statuary, including the chariot, four (possibly six) horses and two grooms. Some fragments of the horses were found with the statue. When intact, it must have been one of the most imposing works of statuary in the world.
