A brief explanation of the term "contrapposto" comparing two ancient Greek sculptures: the New York Kouros and an ancient Roman copy of the Doryphoros (or Spear Bearer) by Polykleitos. Although these particular objects may not have been known in the Renaissance, the ideas and form of contrapposto were revived in the Italian Renaissance.

datowanie odlewu gipsowego: przed 1930 r.
Odlew przedstawia Diadumenosa, zwycięzcę zawodów sportowych. Wzorem dla gipsowego odlewu Diadumenosa z Królewskiej Galerii jest marmurowa rzeźba z British Museum w Londynie. Posąg, datowany na I w. n.e., pierwotnie znajdował się w rzymskiej kolekcji rodziny Farnese. W połowie XIX wieku został zakupiony przez brytyjskie muzeum.
Pierwowzorem greckim dla londyńskiej i łazienkowskiej kopii był niezachowany brązowy posąg atlety autorstwa Polikleta, datowany na lata 430‒420 p.n.e. Wypracowana przez Polikleta postawa, w której przedstawiał rzeźby, tak zwany kontrapost, zakładała oparcie całego ciężaru ciała na jednej nodze i swobodne odsunięcie w bok drugiej. Dzięki takiemu rozwiązaniu kompozycyjnemu i stosowaniu przez rzeźbiarzy reguł tworzenia idealnego posągu opisanych przez Polikleta w traktacie pt. „Kanon”, mogli oni postaciom nadawać większą lekkość i dynamikę. Słynnym posągiem, również przypisywanym Polikletowi, w którym najlepiej widoczny jest tzw. kontrapost jest kanoniczny posąg Doryforosa. Inne znane przedstawienie antycznego atlety to Dyskobol, autorstwa Myrona, ze zbiorów British Museum.

Ο Διαδούμενος του Πολύκλειτου (αντίγραφο του μουσείου Μεσσήνης)
Ο Διαδούμενος του Πολυκλείτου είναι ελληνιστικό μαρμάρινο αντίγραφο του 100 π.κ.χ. που ανακαλύφθηκε στη Δήλο. Το αντίγραφο απομιμείται χάλκινο έργο του Πολύκλειτου του 440 - 420 π.κ.χ. έναν αθλητή που δένει το υφασμάτινο διάδημα (ταινία) στο κεφάλι του. Βρίσκεται στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο.
Στο γλυπτό αυτό διακρίνεται για την πλαστικότητά του, τονίζεται ο όγκος του σώματος και δίνεται έμφαση στην κίνηση. Παρατηρούμε ότι το δεξί ισχύο είναι υψηλότερα από το αριστερό ενώ ο δεξιός ώμος είναι ελαφρά χαμηλότερα από τον αριστερό. Αυτός είναι ο χιασμός των κινήσεων, γνωστός με τον όρο contrapposto, χαρακτηριστικό του «αυστηρού ρυθμού» των πρώιμων κλασικών χρόνων (480-450 π.κ.χ.). Ως έργο του Πολυκλείτου, φέρει όλα εκείνα τα γνωρίσματα που χαρακτηρίζουν τον γλύπτη: μαθηματική ακρίβεια στις αναλογίες του σώματος, χαμηλό ανάγλυφο μαλλιών, ευρείς και δυνατοί ώμοι, τονισμένο και καθαρό σχέδιο μυών.
