"Putting God's Power To Work in Your Life"

April 26, 2020

Acts 2:40-42

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Some things have a lot of power in them even though we cannot see that power. Think about a gas can. It may look like any other liquid but when you put it into the car you can go places. Do you have batteries at your home? There is power stored in a battery to make a light bulb light up. You can't see the power, smell the power or touch the power.

God's Word, the Bible, looks like any other book, but it isn't. It's different because the very power of God's Spirit works when it is poured into the lives of people. It gives them the power to believe and forgive and love. It makes them want to live lives according to God's will. What was Peter doing in our Bible reading today? That's right. He was preaching to people about Jesus. He was sharing God's Word with them. And it's amazing what happened. Three thousand people started believing in Jesus. It changed their lives. These people in turn shared God's Word as they talked about Jesus to one another and sang and prayed together.

If our families are to be happy, we each need more of God's power and God's presence. It is God's power that makes us more patient, kind, and willing to help others. It's God's power that makes us excited about worship. And there's only one way to get God's power and presence. The only way to do it is to let more of God's power and presence flow into the life of our family. This happens just like it did to those converted in our text, when we read the Word and share it with each other. It happens like it did to the man who was in jail, by hearing and reading about Jesus again and again. Some families read a part of God's Word after they eat supper. The family is usually together at supper time. Then they talk about God's Word and how it can help them in their lives. By so doing, they are bringing God's Spirit, God's presence, and God's power into their lives.

If gasoline stays in the can and is never poured into a car, we can't use its power. If a battery is never put into a flashlight, it will never produce light. That's the way it is with God's power too. This evening ask you parents to bring God's power into the life of your family by sharing His Word together.
