OPENING HYMN: "And Will the Judge Descend"
1 And will the Judge descend, And must the dead arise
And not a single soul escape His all-discerning eyes?
2 And from His righteous lips Shall this dread sentence sound
And thro' the num'rous guilty throng Spread black despair around:
3 "Depart from Me, accursed, To everlasting flame,
For rebel angels first prepared, Where mercy never came?"
4 How will my heart endure The terrors of that Day
When earth and heav'n before His face, Astonished, shrink away?
5 But ere that trumpet shakes The mansions of the dead,
Hark from the Gospel's cheering sound What joyful tidings spread:
6 Ye sinners, seek His grace Whose wrath ye cannot bear;
Fly to the shelter of His cross, And find salvation there.
INVOCATION:
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
C: Amen
CONFESSION:
P: Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P: Our help is in the Lord
C: Who made heaven and earth
P: I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.
P: Almighty God our Maker and Redeemer ... Lord Jesus Christ.
C: O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only begotton Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father ... shall be saved.
P: Grant this Lord unto us all.
C: Amen
INTROIT:
HYMN of PRAISE: "All Glory Be To God On High"
1 All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended.
God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again;
O thank Him for His goodness!
2 We praise, we worship Thee, we trust, And give Thee thanks forever,
O Father, that Thy rule is just And wise, and changes never.
Thy boundless power over all things reigns, Done is whatever Thy will ordains. Well for us that Thou rulest.
3 O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son Of God, Thy heavenly Father,
Who didst for all our sins atone And Thy lost sheep dost gather.
Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high From out our depths we sinners cry,
Have mercy on us, Jesus!
4 O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing,
O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift And let thy power availing
Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Savior's blood was shed;
We trust in Thee to save us.
THE SALUTATION:
P: The Lord be with you
C: and with thy spirit
P: Let us pray:
C: Amen
THE SCRIPURE READINGS:
The Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 34: 11-16, 23-24
11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.
Epistle Lesson 1 Cor. 15:20-28
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.
The Gospel Reading Matthew 25:31-46
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
THE CREED
C: I believe in God the Father Almighty; Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.
SERMON HYMN: "Lord of Glory, Who Hast Bought Us"
1 Lord of Glory, who hast bo't us With Thy life-blood as the price,
Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice;
And with that hast freely given Blessings countless as the sand
To th'unthankful and the evil With Thine own unsparing hand;
2 Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to yield Thee Gladly, freely, of Thine own;
With the sunshine of Thy goodness Melt our thankless hearts of stone
Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by Thee, at length believe
That more happy and more blessed 'Tis to give than to receive.
3 Wondrous honor hast Thou given To our humblest charity
In Thine own mysterious sentence, "Ye have done it unto Me."
Can it be, O gracious Master, Thou dost deign for alms to sue,
Saying by Thy poor and needy, "Give as I have giv'n to you"?
4 Yes, the sorrow and the sufferings Which on every hand we see
Channels are for gifts and offerings Due by solemn right to Thee;
Right of which we may not rob Thee, Debt we may not choose but pay,
Lest that face of love and pity Turn from us another day.
5 Lord of Glory, who hast bought us With Thy life-blood as the price,
Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice.
Give us faith to trust Thee boldly, Hope, to stay our souls on Thee;
But, oh! best of all Thy graces, Give us Thine own charity.

CLOSING HYMN: "Lord Lead the Way the Savior Went
1 Lord, lead the way the Savior went, By lane and cell obscure,
And let love’s treasures still be spent, Like His, upon the poor.
2 Like Him, thro' scenes of deep distress, Who bore the world’s sad weight,
We in their crowded loneliness, Would seek the desolate.
3 For Thou hast placed us side by side In this wide world of ill;
And that Thy foll'wers may be tried, The poor are with us still.
4 Mean are all off'rings we can make; But Thou hast taught us, Lord,
If given for the Savior’s sake, They lose not their reward.
