OPEN HYMN: “Lord We Come Before Thee Now”
1 Lord, we come before Thee now, At Thy feet we humbly bow;
Oh, do not our suit disdain! Shall we seek Thee, Lord, in vain?
2 Lord, on Thee our souls depend; In compassion now descend,
Fill our hearts with Thy rich grace, Tune our lips to sing Thy praise.
3 In Thine own appointed way Now we seek Thee, here we stay.
Lord, we know not how to go Till a blessing Thou bestow.
4 Send some message from Thy Word That may joy and peace afford;
Let Thy Spirit now impart Full salvation to each heart.
5 Comfort those who weep and mourn, Let the time of joy return;
Those that are cast down lift up, Make them strong in faith and hope.
6 Grant that all may seek and find Thee a gracious God and kind.
Heal the sick, the captive free; Let us all rejoice in Thee.
INVOCATION
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost
C: Amen
CONFESSION
P: Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
C: Who made the heavens and the earth.
P: I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.
P: Almighty God our Maker and Redeemer … Lord Jesus Christ.
C: O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
P: Almighty God our heavenly Father … shall be saved.
C: Amen.
INTROIT
HYMN of PRAISE: “All Glory Be To God On High”
1 All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended.
God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again;
Oh, thank Him for His goodness!
2 We praise, we worship Thee, we trust, And give Thee thanks forever,
O Father, that Thy rule is just And wise and changes never.
Thy boundless pow'r o'er all things reigns, Done is whate'er Thy will ordains: Well for us that Thou rulest.
3 O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son Of God, Thy heav'nly Father,
Who didst for all our sins atone And Thy lost sheep dost gather:
Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high From out our depths we sinners cry,
Have mercy on us, Jesus!
4 O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing,
O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift And let thy pow'r availing
Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Savior's blood was shed;
We trust in Thee to save us.
THE SALUTATION
P: The Lord be with you.
C: and with thy spirit
P: Let us pray: …
C: Amen
THE SCRIPTURE READINGS:
The Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32
18 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3 “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.
25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!
Epistle Lesson: Philippians 2:1-5
2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
The Holy Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. 31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.
THE CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
SERMON HYMN: “Love Divine All Love Excelling”
1 Love Divine, all love excelling, Joy of heav'n, to earth come down,
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation; Enter ev'ry trembling heart!
2 Breathe, oh, breathe Thy loving Spirit Into ev'ry troubled breast;
Let us all in Thee inherit, Let us find Thy promised rest.
Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.
3 Come, Almighty, to deliver; Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never, Nevermore, Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love.
4 Finish then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee,
Changed from glory into glory, Till in heav'n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.
SERMON: “Humility” 1 Philippians 2:1-5

CLOSING HYMN: “Almighty Father Blees the Word”
1 Almighty Father, bless the Word. Which thro' Thy grace we now have heard.
Oh, may the precious seed take root, Spring up, and bear abundant fruit!
2 We praise Thee for the means of grace As homeward now our steps we trace.
Grant, Lord, that we who worshiped here May all at last in heav'n appear.
