OPEN HYMN: “Blessed Jesus, At Thy Word”

1 Blessed Jesus, at Thy word We are gathered all to hear Thee;

Let our hearts and souls be stirred Now to seek and love and fear Thee,

By Thy teachings, sweet and holy, Drawn from earth to love Thee solely.

2 All our knowledge, sense, and sight Lie in deepest darkness shrouded

Till Thy Spirit breaks our night With the beams of truth unclouded.

Thou alone to God canst win us; Thou must work all good within us.

3 Glorious Lord, Thyself impart, Light of Light, from God proceeding;

Open Thou our ears and heart, Help us by Thy Spirit's pleading;

Hear the cry Thy people raises, Hear and bless our prayers and praises!

4 Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Praise to Thee and adoration!

Grant that we Thy Word may trust And obtain true consolation

INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost

C: Amen

CONFESSION

P: Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

C: Who made the heavens and the earth.

P: I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.

C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.

P: Almighty God our Maker and Redeemer … Lord Jesus Christ.

C: O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P: Almighty God our heavenly Father … shall be saved.

C: Amen.

INTROIT

HYMN of PRAISE: “All Glory Be To God On High”

1 All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended!

To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended.

God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again;

Oh, thank Him for His goodness!

2 We praise, we worship Thee, we trust, And give Thee thanks forever,

O Father, that Thy rule is just And wise and changes never.

Thy boundless pow'r o'er all things reigns, Done is whate'er Thy will ordains: Well for us that Thou rulest.

3 O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son Of God, Thy heav'nly Father,

Who didst for all our sins atone And Thy lost sheep dost gather:

Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high From out our depths we sinners cry,

Have mercy on us, Jesus!

4 O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing,

O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift And let thy pow'r availing

Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Savior's blood was shed;

We trust in Thee to save us.

THE SALUTATION

P: The Lord be with you.

C: and with thy spirit

P: Let us pray: …

C: Amen

THE SCRIPTURE READINGS:

The Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 5:1-7

5 I will sing for the one I love

a song about his vineyard:

My loved one had a vineyard

on a fertile hillside.

2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones

and planted it with the choicest vines.

He built a watchtower in it

and cut out a winepress as well.

Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,

but it yielded only bad fruit.

3 “Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,

judge between me and my vineyard.

4 What more could have been done for my vineyard

than I have done for it?

When I looked for good grapes,

why did it yield only bad?

5 Now I will tell you

what I am going to do to my vineyard:

I will take away its hedge,

and it will be destroyed;

I will break down its wall,

and it will be trampled.

6 I will make it a wasteland,

neither pruned nor cultivated,

and briers and thorns will grow there.

I will command the clouds

not to rain on it.”

7 The vineyard of the Lord Almighty

is the nation of Israel,

and the people of Judah

are the vines he delighted in.

And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;

for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

Epistle Lesson: Philippians 3:12-21

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained. 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

The Holy Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. 38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

THE CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

SERMON HYMN: “Thy Works Not Mine O Christ”

1 Thy works, not mine, O Christ, Speak gladness to this heart;

They tell me all is done; They bid my fear depart.

To whom save Thee, who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

2 Thy wounds, not mine, O Christ, Can heal my bruised soul;

Thy stripes, not mine, contain The balm that makes me whole.

To whom save Thee, who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

3 Thy cross, not mine, O Christ, Has borne the awful load

Of sins that none could bear But the incarnate God.

To whom save Thee, who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

4 Thy death, not mine, O Christ, Has paid the ransom due;

Ten thousand deaths like mine Would have been all too few.

To whom save Thee, who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

5 Thy righteousness, O Christ, Alone can cover me:

No righteousness avails Save that which is of Thee.

To whom save Thee, who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

SERMON: “Hold On” 1 Philippians 3:12-21

BENEDICTION

CLOSING HYMN: “Fight The Good Fight With All Thy Might”

1 Fight the good fight With all thy might; Christ is thy Strength and Christ thy Right.

Lay hold on life, and it shall be Your joy and crown eternally.

2 Run the straight race Thro' God's good grace; Lift up your eyes, and seek His face.

Life with its way before us lies; Christ is the Path and Christ the Prize.

3 Cast care aside; Upon thy Guide Lean, and His mercy will provide;

Trust, and enduring faith shall prove Christ is its Life and Christ its Love.

4 Faint not nor fear, His arms are near; He changeth not, and thou art dear.

Only believe, and thou shalt see That Christ is All in all to thee.
