OPEN HYMN: “Prayer Is the Souls Sincere Desire”
1 Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, Unuttered or exprest,
The motion of a hidden fire That trembles in the breast.
2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh, The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye, When none but God is near.
3 Prayer is the simplest form of speech That infant lips can try;
Prayer the sublimest strains that reach The Majesty on high.
4 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice Returning from his ways,
While angels in their songs rejoice And cry, "Behold, he prays!"
5 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air,
His watchword at the gates of death-- He enters heaven with pray'r.
6 The saints in prayer appear as one In word and deed and mind,
While with the Father and the Son Sweet fellowship they find.
7 Nor prayer is made by man alone-- The Holy Spirit pleads,
And Jesus on th'eternal throne For sinners intercedes.
8 O Thou, by whom we come to God, The Life, the Truth, the Way,
The path of prayer Thyself hast trod--Lord, teach us how to pray.
INVOCATION
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost
C: Amen
CONFESSION
P: Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
C: Who made the heavens and the earth.
P: I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.
P: Almighty God our Maker and Redeemer … Lord Jesus Christ.
C: O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
P: Almighty God our heavenly Father … shall be saved.
C: Amen.
INTROIT
HYMN of PRAISE: “All Glory Be To God On High”
1 All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended.
God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again;
Oh, thank Him for His goodness!
2 We praise, we worship Thee, we trust, And give Thee thanks forever,
O Father, that Thy rule is just And wise and changes never.
Thy boundless pow'r o'er all things reigns, Done is whate'er Thy will ordains: Well for us that Thou rulest.
3 O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son Of God, Thy heav'nly Father,
Who didst for all our sins atone And Thy lost sheep dost gather:
Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high From out our depths we sinners cry,
Have mercy on us, Jesus!
4 O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing,
O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift And let thy pow'r availing
Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Savior's blood was shed;
We trust in Thee to save us.
THE SALUTATION
P: The Lord be with you.
C: and with thy spirit
P: Let us pray: …
C: Amen
THE SCRIPTURE READINGS:
The Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9
6 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Epistle Lesson: Philippians 1:1-5, 19-27
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
The Holy Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went.
“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
THE CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
SERMON HYMN: “Come My Soul, Thy Suit Prepare”
1 Come, my soul, thy suit prepare: Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He Himself has bid thee pray, Therefore will not say thee nay.
2 Thou art coming to a King, Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and pow'r are such None can ever ask too much.
3 With my burden I begin: Lord, remove this load of sin;
Let Thy blood, for sinners spilt, Set my conscience free from guilt.
4 Lord, I come to Thee for rest, Take possession of my breast;
There Thy blood-bought right maintain And without a rival reign.
5 As the image in the glass Answers the beholder’s face,
Thus unto my heart appear; Print Thine own resemblance there.
6 While I am a pilgrim here, Let Thy love my spirit cheer;
As my Guide, my Guard, my Friend, Lead me to my journey’s end.
7 Show me what I have to do; Every hour my strength renew.
Let me live a life of faith; Let me die Thy people’s death.
SERMON: “I Pray” 1 Philippians 1:5-9, 19-27

LORD’S PRAYER
BENEDICTION
CLOSING HYMN: “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”
1 What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry Ev'rything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry Ev'rything to God in prayer!
2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a Friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness-- Take it to the Lord in prayer.
3 Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our Refuge-- Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He'll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.
