Captain America's Movie Look Unveiled in an Exclusive Comic-Con Poster
Next summer, 70 years after he first appeared in comic books, Captain America is marching onto movie screens. "Captain America: The First Avenger" is being released in July of 2011, but the first official image of how the superhero will look has just been revealed exclusively here on Yahoo!
The image is from one of a pair of posters that will be distributed this weekend at the annual San Diego Comic-Con. It's a concept painting that shows Captain America, played in the movie by Chris Evans, on the frontlines of a battle in World War II. His costume, while obviously inspired by the comic book, looks to be more realistic and utilitarian than the original's blue tights.
The movie costume has the basic appearance of the classic look: blue with a red-and-white midsection and a big star on the chest. But instead of a stretchy, skin-tight fabric, this costume is made from a thicker, more leathery material. He wears brown leather gloves and military boots, and the red stripes on his uniform are actually straps latched onto his belt.
The biggest change is probably his helmet; instead of a winged cowl, Cap wears a hard, molded helmet with the eye mask built in. He also brandishes a gun like he did in the comics during WWII, but the most faithful element of his outfit is his shield. Looking just like it does in the comics, Captain America deflects bullets off his signature shield as he strikes a heroic pose. Also released today is the poster for Marvel Studios' other big movie of 2011, "Thor." A few photos of the costumes from that movie have already surfaced, but the concept art gives a full-length view of Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) as he grapples with his nemesis Loki (Tom Hiddleston). It also presents the best look so far at Thor's mighty hammer, Mjolnir, previously glimpsed in the bonus scene after the credits of "Iron Man 2."
