This species is unusual for the flowers—the lower flowers on the inflorescence are apetalous. This is apparent on numerous specimens, but apparently previous taxonomists assumed the petals were cauducous. The petals seem outsized for the plants, and are undivided as in occasional variants of Mitella stauropetala, its closest relative.

While a linear-petaled form is occasional in nature, this species tends to bloom this way in the greenhouse, especially on depauperate plants.
