This species is found in the northern parts of the Front Ranges of Colorado (from about the middle of the state northwards), and it is also modestly disjunct in the Laramie Ranges. It appears to be the sister species to H. hallii, but they differ dramatically enough in floral features that they have been classified previously in different sections of the genus. These pictures come from a wild population in northern Colorado.
