Heuchera americana

This species is native across a wide range of eastern North America. It is unusual in tolerating upland habitats far away from outcrops, although it is still often found in dense populations on rocks where they are available. The hypanthium (floral cup below the sepals) is urceolate as in other members of subsection Americanae, though less obviously so.

Hirsute H. americana var. americana (var. "heteradenia")

This interesting variant is named more to point it out than because I think it is necessarily very distinct. These photos come from cultivated material from Polk Co., Tennessee (given to me by P. Zale). These plants are identical to ordinary H. americana var. americana except for the short-hirsute petioles (less dense than var. hirsuticaulis).
