A distinctive species of the Laguna Mountains of the southern tip of California, very similar to H. elegans other than the smaller flowers with deeply included stamens and styles. It seems to be more tolerant than usual of chaparral-type habitats (or rather rock outcrops in those habitats), and it occurs at lower elevations (in fact the Laguna mountains are not as high as the typical altitudes of H. elegans, H. hirsutissima, &c.). Like most members of this group (subsection Elegantes) the leaves are prominently ciliate.
