This species is found in the mountains of central New Mexico, in drier and sunnier spots at lower elevations than other species in the same area. It is very similar to H. parvifolia, except that it has petioles that are sparsely villous throughout and the hypanthium does not flatten in development. These photographs come from a population on the side of Capitan Peak (the floral macros are from cultivation; otherwise wild).
