Fáilte!
Welcome to the fourth issue of Primary CPD Newsletter!
https://sites.google.com/site/primarycpd/home
This newsletter aims to provide teachers with regular updates on items relevant to the teaching and learning taking place in Irish Primary Schools, and in particular, those items relevant to Mathematics.
A chara,
The remaining days and remaining pages in books are disappearing fast! Lets hope some of the ideas below might be of use now that we're on the home stretch! In the next newsletter, I will focus in on Place Value since that will likely be the first topic in the maths book most of us will meet next school year, as well as looking at some hints and tips for planning. If there's any area that you would like to see developed in more detail in the coming newsletters, please let me know.
In the meantime, good luck with the end of year activities agus bain taitneamh as an samhraidh (má thagann sé!).
Le gach dea-ghuí
Claire
Numeracy:
Free from TES iBoard: A game for comparing numbers of sweets to see the difference and a pattern making activity that explores symmetry.
Another one of my new and recent finds is Australian Curriculum Lessons; has more than just mathematics, but its math lessons are quite good. I did Plan a Park with my fifth class; another lesson that teachers in senior infants-second might like is Make 10: a card lesson for teaching number facts
Soon the standardised tests will be over and there might be more time to do non-book maths. Why not consider doing some maths games, trails and/or ICT based projects etc.? If you're looking for ideas have a look here: https://sites.google.com/site/primarycpd/mathematics/teaching-methodologies-and-approaches-all-classes
In particular, these below are worthy of note:
Maths Playground: Excellent site packed with interactive word problems, videos, logic puzzles and more
Solve the DaVinci Code: Puzzle project, based on number theory and codes, that challenges children to investigate and solve a mystery based on Leonardo Da Vinci and the Renaissance.
Powerlines: an interactive number puzzle, that can be played equally well with whole class on IWB or on individual computers
Copp School Maths Trail: An excellent example of a trail from a school in the UK
Shape and Space Trail: A generic trail that could be adapted for most classes
Open Ended Investigations: taskcards for Junior Classes (Insert Tables- Word, Draw Shapes-Word, Create a Graph- Word, Using a Geoboard create letters) and for the Senior classes (MSW Logo & Spreadsheets)
Projects using ICT: A handout outlining project Ideas from Infants to Sixth Class, as well as specific taskcards and activity sheets for Finding and inserting shapes(Junior Classes) and Websites (Senior Classes)
Literacy:
Do you use Jolly Phonics in your school? If so you might be interested in this free, downloadable resource from http://www.communication4all.co.uk/http/PhonicsWeb.htm; Scroll down to Interactive Phonics Presentation with songs to access the Jolly Phonics songs put to music.
Again for the younger classes, From the Teachers.Net Gazette » Partner Book Talk Procedures – Kindergarten Precursor to Literature Circles, where a teacher explains how their Partner Book Talk is an extension of their Read Aloud with accountable talk.
Novels for 5th /6th classes: if you're looking for some new ideas, or resource ideas for a novel you might already be using, check out this list: 10 Novels Every Middle Schooler Should Read
Other bits:
The NCCA has developed a number of resources to help parents to support their child's learning in primary school. These resources include videos, tip sheets and multimedia presentations on maths and literacy and many are available in various languages. Click here to take a look at the resources for each class level.
In particular, they have a fantastic range of new Maths Resources for the parents of Infant classes, 1st and 2nd Classes. These include new tip sheets, video clips and podcasts which give parents ideas for helping children to learn at home using simple games and everyday activities. Indeed, many teachers of these classes may also find some new ideas here.
While the sections for the parents of children in third to sixth classes don't include such a wealth of resources, they do have some great nuggets, like this presentation Division as sharing which I find teachers really appreciate. In fact, I have shown this to fifth class for the past few years when revising short division and preparing them for the introduction of long division.
Another good site worth sharing with the parents is Help My kid learn. Developed as part of the National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy among Children and Young People, this Irish website is for the parents/guardians of children aged 0 – 12 years, from birth to the end of primary school. It is designed to support parents with fun activities and tips according to their child’s age. Each age group has lots of ideas for helping children with talking, playing, reading, writing and using numbers.
These would be worthwhile additions to any parents' evening, or even to the parents' page of your school website.
