Weekend in the Bavarian Alps with Friends

Another weekend, another trip with Jordan. One of his big goals was to go to the Alps. Luckily, you’ll remember, I know people who live in the Bavarian Alps. Good people, people I like to visit, Tom and Susan Welsh! So we rented a car, loaded it full of people and headed south!

Who is we you ask? Well, Jordan, myself and Jessica! Let me introduce Jessica: back a million years ago (or 14 years) in high school I was on a club rowing team. Jessica and I met on said team (Water Street Rowing, for those curious) and we didn’t really keep in touch. A year ago, I noticed on facebook that she was writing these really interesting articles, on dating, on co-living, on being a smart and successful woman, and they spoke to me. So I reached out and got back into contact after ~1 decade of little interaction and we hit it off again! She lives in Berlin now, and so joined us on our sojourn to the Alps!

We were eager to get to the top of the mountains, but the cable car isn’t running, so we hopped on the old fashioned and still functional cog train. We passed cute pastures full of cows, and grand mountain views on our way to the top.

At which point we walked out into the sun to the grand view below and ate up the scenery.

Jordan was like a kid in a candy store. While we both know he would have preferred to run to the top of the mountain, he was still stoked to be frolicking around the top.

Because riding the cog train to the top was exhausting we decided to grab some delicious lunch, a thoroughly Bavarian meal. Kasespatezal, weisse sausages and pretzel, eaten at the top of the tallest mountain in Germany.

On the way down we stopped at Lake Eibsee, which on the slightly warm day, was delightful. If given more time I could have spent the whole day sunning and reading lakeside.

Jordan saw the water and immediately jumped in. He’s a lot like a puppy.

Meanwhile as Jessica and I sat by the side of the lake she looked at me: “Can you imagine if 14 years ago, I turned around in the crew boat and said “One day we are going to be sitting on the side of an alpine lake””. It’s a crazy world we live in.

We stopped in the lakeside biergarten for a final lakeside beer, when we spotted what can only be described as fish on a stick. It’s exactly what it sounds like, except WAY more delicious.

The next day we woke up to less than ideal weather (rain!) and so decided to do a decidedly wet hike up one of the mountains.

It started to clear up as we made it to a randomly located restaurant on the mountain side. It’s kind of odd, but apparently on every mountain top in Europe there is an adorable restaurant. This one was particularly old and had an epic view.

We took the time to drink a beer and dry off and have an in depth conversation about meditation.

And on the way down I met a cute little snail friend! He/she was way bigger than the snails I worked on during my PhD, but we made friends any way.

On the way down we spotted the ski jump and decided to stop by for a closer look, which sparked an important debate. I stated that Jordan couldn’t run to the top of the ski jump in 20 minutes. He claimed he could. We weren’t able to settle the debate, but I continue to stand my ground.

Final morning on our way out of town we stopped in this gorge. It was gorgeous.

A few things knocked off Jordan’s bucket list, a few relaxing days hanging with wonderful people, and an overall successful trip.

Oh and on the way back we stopped at a Burger King and there was this creepy french fry man. He may or may not be recovering from heroin. Or meth.
