Dorothy Comes to Europe

Like I said, living in Europe I have more visitors than I did stateside. My friend Dorothy took the opportunity of me living here to come visit. I didn’t have my own place yet, so we met in Berlin. I had been to Berlin twice before (once since living here)(see Berlin with Diego, and Berlin with Jim posts), but I hadn’t actually gotten to know the city. And let me tell you, it’s a glorious city.

I know this is horribly ignorant, but I didn’t know about the Battle of Berlin. I knew Germany lost the war, but I didn’t realize that something that happened 70 years ago is still impacting the city today. That they are still finding bombs, and things that were hidden as the city was being invaded. And that this church, during one of the air bombings, was bombarded so hard that the dome melted. It melted. Crazy.

This is also the only landmark I took a photo of when Jim and I were in Berlin.

Dorothy and I have been friends for longer during our lives than we haven’t. And this trip was excellent. She helped me see something about myself that I needed to see, and I love her for it.

She went out one night without me (I like sleep), and then like a trooper, we went sightseeing the next day. It was a struggle. A real struggle.

We went to the National Museum (which is excellent if you like museums), and I brought a book so she could look around for as long as she wanted. I really liked this statue, it speaks to me.

In exchange she went on a walking tour with me. It was one of the best tours I have ever had. We stopped at the chocolate shop which made Berlin landmarks out of chocolate. This bear was my favorite.

After 3 days in Berlin we hopped on a plane to Brussels. Because flights around Europe are cheap. Dirt cheap. This is Day waiting for the flight.

And this is Brussels. Again, I had been to Brussels as a child, but I haven’t been back as an adult. This city is awesome! Even if all I really wanted to do was walk around and drink. Which we did. We ate a lot too.

I don’t love beer, but I love Kriek. It’s a lambic (Belguim style beer) that is flavored with cherries. It’s a cherry beer. It’s amazing.

Dorothy agrees.

Till next bar crawl Brussels!
