During my masters I didn’t travel nearly enough. And by “not nearly enough” I mean I basically worked all the time.
But I did take time to go to my first European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEBE)(this will not be the last trip to this conference), which in 2011 was in the great Italian city of Turin (Torino in English).
I have mentioned before that I love Italy, and this trip was no exception. Not only was there excellent science (I still remember wonderful talks and great posters) but also really good after hours discussions over drinks.
On Wednesday afternoon there was an excursion. I rarely go on those, but this time I did, and it was well worth it. We had a tour of the Barolo winery, which was awesome. I still have two of the bottles from that trip.
We then had one of the most stunning and memorable dinners I have ever had. It was on a hillside, in the vineyards. The food was amazing, the view was stunning.
After the conference I had tacked on two extra days to do some exploring. I went to Venice. I have been many places, and there are few where I would like to live. Venice is one of them. Immediately upon arrival I realized I wanted to know all the little streets. I wanted to lose myself in the canals, know the side streets and cafes. Experience the cold in this grand beautiful city, clinging to the tops of the water and full of history.
I went and walked around the glass factories, and on the way back stopped to eat dinner. The sun was setting and I was just on the edge of Venice so I had an amazing view over the city.
During dinner a vender came up and handed me a rose. I refused and told him I couldn't pay, but he walked away. The waiter shrugged his shoulders and informed me that he had bought the rose for me. Apparently I was too beautiful to be dining without a boy...
On the way back I stopped to see my friend Nick in London. This was the first of many trips to London on the way to or from somewhere in Europe. I got to meet his new girlfriend Victoire (who would also become a staple in my life) and we had a glorious meal.
