The tail end of my summer travel for work was a trip to Helsinki Finland for the IUSSI conference. One of the things I’ve noticed over the past few years is that I keep retracing my steps, going to the same places and cities I have already been to. Helsinki was somewhere new! And I loved it. I don’t like being hot anymore, summer is not my favorite season. But the Northern Latitudinal position of Helsinki keeps it nice and cool, even during the summer.
My walk from the hostel to the conference center was lovely. I walked right past the marketplace, which is on the water. Each bright yellow or orange tent has a world of goodies.
Which compared to the grey skies is brightly colored and looks delicious. Chantrelle mushrooms, blueberries, and gooseberries. Lovely!
This is a statehouse, also on my walk to the conference. The blue sky is fleeting though, and likely won’t last through the day. See those small storm clouds on the horizon? They are not fucking around.
The conference dinner was held on an island in the bay in Helsinki. We had to take a boat. That’s a first for a conference dinner.
These loungers were sitting on the beach, which was comical. I was wearing my winter jacket. In August.
People who study social insects all clumped together. On an island. In Finland.
I loved Finland, I loved walking around, I loved the food, I liked the music. I will be seeing you again soon.
On the boat ride back you can see a storm rolling in. It is hilarious how the blue sky is being taken over so quickly, that the shore doesn’t know it’s about to get rained on. It’s still sunny there.
You can see the contrast really well here. I love this place. My kind of summer.
