I wandered for a full year after I graduated from college. I went to Ghana for a month, lived at Mountain Lake Biological Station for 3, moved across the country and camped out at my Aunt and Uncle’s place in Santa Barbara for another 4.
So it seems silly that in the middle of this adventure I got wanderlust. But I did. So off to Australia I went.
I got my friend Tamara on board and we headed for the sun speckled country in early January.
Few things: 1) the ozone is thinner above Australia. Wear sunscreen. A lot of sunscreen. I burned in new and interesting ways I didn’t even understand. 2) Aussies are the most attractive people on the planet. Seriously. 3) it is possible to see a lot in 2 weeks.
We started in Melbourne, visiting some of Tamara’s friends. We were treated to an epic wine tour, saw little penguins, fell in love with wombats (I really like the uncharismatic organisms) and drank SO. MUCH. WINE.
Then we headed to the tropics and flew up to Cairns. Tamara was having inner ear issues, but I embarked on a 2 day dive trip aboard a darling little catamaran. I have always wanted to dive the Great Barrier reef, I grew up dreaming about it. It was a dream come true, and more than I ever could have imagined.
Then we went to Sydney for the last 4 days. To get drunk. We saw the aquarium and the sights. But really we were in Sydney to drink a lot.
And then we came home. It was fun, it was epic, and I can’t wait to go back.
