Between completing my MS and starting my PhD I traveled for two months. I started this epic journey like I usually did, by stopping in London.
However, this trip was a special treat. I landed and we sat around drinking Pimms (a first for me)
and then late in the afternoon got into the car and drove to his family home in Boston.
His mother, who could only be classified as the best hostess ever, met us with a late and delicious dinner.
Over the next week we hung out in the rose garden
Went to see Othello in the park, played Scrabble in the sitting room:
Played a vicious game of crochet
And generally enjoyed each other’s company. It is one of many great memories I have with Nick and Victoire.
On afternoon we went to one of the other big houses in the area. It was closed, but we drove around back to look at the gardens. They were also closed. So we hopped the fence. Wandering around those gardens I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my life. We came up with things that we would do everyday if we lived in a house like this. On the way back to the car we saw police man on the other side of the fence we had hopped. He looked at us and told us we were trespassing. We said, quite puzzled “we thought the gardens were open for the afternoon.” The police looked at the barbed wire fence (we had found a break in the wire to hop), looked at us, looked at the fence, and just started laughing. We were not arrested, but it was close.
