Coffee Table

Coffee Table

June 8, 2013

This coffee table is made out of red oak (top and bottom shelf), and clear pine (legs - painted gloss black). The top and bottom shelf are finished with clear wipe-on polyurethane (two coats), with light sanding between coats. The red oak pieces were made from one piece of 20" x 42" red oak, and two pieces of 6" x 42" (nominal, 5-1/2" x 42" actual) red oak, joined with a plate joiner/biscuits and glue. The legs were made from 3-1/2" width clear pine, also joined with a plate joiner/biscuits and glue. After joining, all pieces were sanded to provide a smooth and even join. The legs were painted with one coat of white primer, and two coats of gloss black, with light sanding between coats.

All wood pieces were 3/4" thick. The legs were fastened on with table leg plates and threaded rod (details are given in the plans).

Additional views of the table are shown below.

Note the cross-support under the top (also under bottom shelf - not shown).

Plans:

The design of the coffee table is fairly straight-forward. However, if you would like more detailed plans, you can find them here:

Details:

Table leg plates were fastened to the bottom of the table top with screws and glue.

Threaded rods were screwed into the leg plates, and secured with locking nuts. Thread locker was used to ensure the rod would not loosen.

A washer and lock nut on each of the bottom legs pulled the leg assembly together. After sitting for 24 hours, the legs were re-checked for tightness. This 24 hour period also ensured that the urethane coating had fully set.
