Relief - Unplayable in a Bunker

When a ball is in a bunker, and the player declares it to be unplayable, the rules have required that the ball be dropped in the bunker, but for 2019 additional relief for an additional penalty stroke allows the player to drop the ball outside the bunker.

So there are three choices. In all cases the point of relief must not be closer to the hole. than where the ball had come to rest

    • For 1 penalty stroke - inside the bunker, back on a line from the flag through where the ball came to rest and then within one club length on either side of that line. (position 2)

    • For 1 penalty stroke - inside the bunker, within two club lengths of where the ball came to rest (position 3)

    • For 2 Penalty strokes - outside the bunker, back on a line from the flag through where the ball came to rest (position 4)
