New Member's Handicap

Handicap for a member's first week

For a new player, their playing handicap is calculated for their first week as follows:

  • calculates the average net score for the day by all other Gaffers.

  • calculates the handicap (up to a maximum of 36 for Gaffers) that the first time player would have needed to achieve that average net score for the day.

  • that calculated handicap is then used for Gaffers Cup and Skins for that first week only. The differential it represents, becomes the first entry in their history.

The new player’s adjusted gross score from that first week is also used to generate a differential for their history for subsequent weeks.

Example:

A player enjoying their first Gaffers week scores 88 gross

The average net on that day was 78.9 (rounded to 79).

Note that this is a poor average score – reflecting a difficult week on the course for most players. Normally one would expect the average net to be close to the par.

The new player scored 88 gross so they are assigned a handicap of 9 for the first week Gaffers Cup and Skins events (88 – 79 = 9).

During that round, the player scored 7 on the 1st hole (par 4; Gaffers Stroke Index = 13). Using ESC they have a maximum net double bogey allowed (eg 6 on an a par 4 on which they are not allowed a stroke) so their Adjusted Gross is therefore 87.
