Local Rules are additional rules for use at a particular course, or in a specific league or event. The Local Rules used for Gaffers events include some from KitchenerGolf (and explicit to Doon18) as well as Gaffers Local Rules. If you play a tournament or non-Gaffers event you should check whether any of the Local Rules used in Gaffers play are applicable.
The two KitchenerGolf Local Rules were printed on the earlier scorecard (red) see right. They are still in effect but that section of the card was not included when new cards were printed. The 'new' cards also do not show the latest ratings and slopes for the course/tee combinations.
Local rule #2 can be expressed in terms introduced in the Rules of Golf 2019 and effected by markings on the course ...
"The areas marked by Red Stakes with Green tops are environmentally sensitive and are No Play Zones wholly contained within Penalty areas."
You may not play a ball in such areas and they should not be entered. See our section on "What to do" if your ball enters one of these areas. They are all south of Highway 401.
Hole Number Eight {Doon 18}
Should a player hit their second (or higher) shot into the Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) crossing the fairway (defined as a No Play Zone) in addition to the normal options there is an additional option available that also requires one penalty stroke.
Further information:
If the player has hit a ball successfully across the fairway ESA, and then it has entered an ESA on either side of the fairway, they must play their ball from the place the ball entered that ESA.
Additional option: Cross to the other side of ESA bisecting the fairway and hit their next shot at the beginning of the fairway on a line that approximates the line of the second shot, {known as the Gaffers Drop Zone}. The area is at the top of the rise, and is not specifically marked.
Regular options: (also requiring a penalty stroke) are:
Stroke and Distance -replay from the same spot
drop within 2 club lengths of the point of entry into the Penalty Area
back on a line from the hole through the point where the ball entered the ESA.
Penalty Area Boundary (including the No Play Zones - Environmentally Sensitive Areas)
For all Penalty Areas, the Gaffers Local Rule is that in lieu of a painted line, the edge of the generally mown area is to be regarded as the boundary. On the Doon 18 course, the Environmentally Sensitive Areas are deemed to be No Play Zones and are completely within Penalty Areas.
Alternative to Stroke and Distance (ASD)
Where a player has to take relief when the ball is Lost in the General Area or Out of Bounds one of the options available to the player is to take “Stroke and Distance Relief”. The ball is played from the same location as before and the player takes one additional (penalty) stroke.
From 2019, there is an Official Local Rule available to speed up play, that Gaffers will adopt called the “Alternative to Stroke and Distance”.
Instead of returning to the point of the shot, relief can be taken from a point at the edge of the fairway where the ball has ended up (or believed to have ended up). A player may not use this option if they have already played a provisional ball from the point of the original shot.

Match Play Scores
Players participating in match play round during regular league play are to “putt” all holes even if they have been conceded. Once the shot or hole is conceded it defines the Match Play result for the hole. However, the actual strokes taken need to be entered on the scorecard for all the other programs.
Opting to not complete a Hole - Gaffers to use Maximum Score variant of Stroke Play (Rule 21.2)
In order to maintain the pace of play, a player may choose to “pick up” and not complete a hole. "A player who does not hole out under the Rules for any reason gets the maximum score for the hole."
The maximum score for any hole for Gaffers play is defined as 10.
Note
All rules are consistent with Rules of Golf as published by Golf Canada.
