In memory of the Florance family who settled on Kangaroo Island in June 1883.

JOHN BIGGEN FLORANCE (1845-1902)

Born in New Zealand and arrived in the colony of South Australia 1847

Farmer and Storekeeper.

One of the foundling trustees of the Wisanger School.

Elected member of the Kingscote Council 1893-1902.

Council nominee on the committee for the John McDouall Stuart Memorial.

MARTHA FLORANCE (nee Bishop) (1852-1925) wife of John

Born in Ireland.
Grazier and Storekeeper.
Widowed in 1902, Martha worked the 4945 acre property, Cygnet Park Station,
until her death.

Achieved freehold status of the property in 1919, a display of courage
and endurance for a woman of this period.

Home nurse, midwife and foster mother of Ruby Turner.

This memorial car park site was once owned by the Florance Family,
where they resided, and operated a general store, before moving to their
Cygnet Park property.

Association, and Kangaroo Island Council.
