AT KANGAROO ISLAND.

A pleasing ceremony took place at Queenscliffe on Saturday, when Mr. C. Tucker, M. P., unveiled an obelisk to the memory of Captain Matthew Flinders, who exactly 100 years previously landed on Kangaroo Island and gave it its name. The column, which is about 12ft. from the base of the pedestal, is of Murray Bridge freestone, and weighs about three tons. The district council granted the site, which is an excellent one, and the cost of the obelisk whs subscribed by a number of patriotic local people and others. The inscription is as follows:—"Erected to the memory of Captain Matthew Flinders, who, sailing in H M.S. Investigator, landed upon and named Kangaroo Island on the 22nd March, 1802. Unveiled on the 22nd March, 1902." There was a good attendance of residents and visitors, amongst the latter being Messrs. W. J. Blacker, A. McDonald, O. M. R. Dumasj and L. von Douses Ms.P.

On March 22, 1902, the members of the district unveiled an obelisk erected by the residents of Kingscote, marking the centenary, and in honour of the great navigator. The obelisk overlooks Nepean Bay, where Flinders in the Investigator, lay at anchor.
