Grimshaws Corner

During the 19 C., people settled around Christmas Cove, the main point of entry to Penneshaw. When the nearby jetty was built in 1902, this area known as New Town developed. The jetty simplified loading and unloading and led to increased trade.

The first stores were located behind the hotel (serving also as a blacksmith and saddlery) and on this corner, now called Grimshaws after one of the original storekeepers on this site. The hotel was built in 1903 after the completion of the jetty. Traders opened further shops, and the area replaced Christmas Cove as the hub of commercial and social activity.

Government facilities provided during this period included the stone police station and galvanised iron post office (the postmaster doing double duty next door as a blacksmith).

Clark's confidence in the growth of Penneshaw led him to build the Sorrento Guest House in 1914. Locally made bricks are stacked ready to build the corner store.
