Solway

Erected by the Gramp family on the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Solway. 16 Oct 1987.

The Solway, a 337 ton, 3 mast ship, captained by R. Pearson, was engaged by The South Australian Company, for transporting 52 migrants from Germany to Australia, and then commissioned into the Company's whaling fleet. It sailed from Hamburg on 9th June 1837, and arrived at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, on 16th October 1837.

This plaque was erected by the Gramp family in memory of Johann Gramp, and his fellow passengers, on 16th October 1987. The family have taken the liberty of correcting several spelling mistakes that occurred in the original list.

Note: On the 8th December 1837 the Solway was lost at Encounter Bay during a severe storm. Thankfully Captain Pearson and crew were saved.
