The Post Office

A Postal Service was established 34 years after the first settlement ...

Augustus Reeves who had arrived with his father in 1847, spent his childhood at Beare's point (present day wharf area). He married Eliza Calnan and rebuilt one of the original old stone dwellings at Reeves Point.

He became Post Master from this home in 1871 until he moved to The Bluff Farm only 1 km further west in 1883, and a new post Office was established in the new township of Queenscliffe (present day Kingscote).

After 1850 land surveys allowed secure title to land taken up on Kangaroo Island.

Settlement expanded and a postal service at Cygnet River was established in 1870.

"Many neat cottages are still standing, although unoccupied, and some good stone houses, defaced by premature dilapidations, show that the town was once inhabited by civilised human beings.

The chief mansion of the almost deserted settlement we did not behold, for the materials had just been removed from the island for use elsewhere. Five families constitute the town's population."
