Pioneers Memorial Kingscote

A crowd, some dressed as pioneers, has gathered to witness the unveiling of the Pioneer's Memorial, Kingscote by the Governor Sir Winston Dugan. Mrs MacLagan of Swanbourne, W.A., a grand daughter of the late Thomas Hudson Beare, one of the pioneers who landed on Kangaroo Island 27 July 1836 from the barque "Duke of York", laid the foundation stone. Pioneer's Memorial, Kingscote. Unveiling ceremony by the Governor Sir Winston Dugan, 9 November 1936. This memorial commemorates South Australia's first settlers who arrived here in July 1836 onboard the "Duke of York". The foundation stone was laid by Mrs McLaglan, a descendant of Thomas Hudson Beare, one of the first settlers. Note: the 1st Mate was in fact William RICHARDS (1810-18??) who was a long time shipmate and friend of Robert Clark Morgan. - Chris Ward.

This memorial was unveiled by His Excellency the Governor Sir Winston Dugan K.C.M.G.  C.B.  D.S.O. 9th November 1936.


Right Side Inscription 

This stone was laid by Mrs MacLagen formerly (Doris Beare) July 27th 1936.
