This policy refers to employees labeled on-farm field workers, harvester, and those that work in the packinghouse facility.
All employees will be trained in injury procedures and handling bleeding incidents in food production and handling areas.
All injuries must be reported to the supervisor and noted on the Disease and Injury Log (Appendix E.) If it's a minor injury, then first aid will be provided to treat the injury, following the Open Wound Policy and Blood and Bodily Fluids Policy, as applicable.
If the accident requires more than first aid then employers must report immediately by telephone or email to the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) any serious injury or illness, or death of an employee occurring in a place of employment or in connection with any employment. See 8 CCR Section 342 (a). OSHA Form 300-Log of Work Related Injuries must be filled out for major injuries illnesses and death on the job.
First aid kits will be readily accessible to all JAS Personnel at cooler, office and workshop. Annual visual inspections before the beginning of the season of JAS first aid kits will ensure that no product expires. The compliance specialist will conduct these checks using the First Aid Kit Check. Major injuries will be attended to immediately with basic first aid/ CPR while trained medical staff and emergency personnel are on the way.
Any employee with major open and exposed cuts, lesions, or wounds that cannot be effectively covered with a bandage or glove will be restricted from working directly with food or food contact surfaces.
Minor cuts or abrasions may be properly covered with a non-permeable bandage. A ll open wounds on the hands must be both bandaged and covered with a non-permeable glove while working with food or food contact surfaces.
If produces is contaminated with blood or bodily fluids while in the ground, it should be quarantined in an area of 5x5 diameter and employees instructed no to harvest or enter the area.
Any produce or packaging materials exposed to blood or bodily fluids shall be immediately disposed of in trash receptacles outside of food production/handling areas. Equipment shall be sanitized immediately and before use/reuse. If incidents bleeding or bodily fluids cannot be contained, the affected person may not continue work.
If the incident happens at field level, it shall be reported on the farmer's Contamination Incident Log (Appendix F.).
If the incident happens at the cooler, it shall be reported on the cooler's s Contamination Incident Log (Appendix F.).
