Searching for the Dark Matter of the Universe in South Dakota

The former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota has become a home to low-background science.  The LUX experiment is located at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility, located in Lead, SD.  I will present the first search for WIMP dark matter with the LUX detector, a time projection chamber using 300 kg of liquid xenon as a dark matter target, as well as the experimental program of the planned 7 ton LZ experiment.
