Magnetic catalysis and quantum Hall effect in monolayer and bilayer graphene

In relativistic field dynamics, a magnetic field is a strong catalyst of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, leading to a generation of a dynamical mass of fermions even at the weakest attractive interactions between fermions and antifermions. I review recent results of the application of a modified version of the magnetic catalysis theory to the description of the quantum Hall effect in both monolayer and bilayer graphene. The manifestations of the predictions of this theory in recent experiments are discussed.
